Testimonials from jhd clients
“We were impressed how JHD interpreted our requirements for a contemporary house design, but with a traditional feel internally and in harmony with the surrounding country landscape. JHD’s knowledge of the local county council planning requirements resulted in a stress-free approval of the design. A contemporary building of unique design and construction sited on the side of a hill in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Quality architecture that is recognised as an enhancement to the local environment.”

“We approached JHD Architects to help us design and project manage a partial refurbishment of our newly purchased home.
Their design removed the existing roof structure and created an entirely new one with a much increased top floor space with 2 new bathrooms and 2 new bedrooms. It also had a considerable amount of, now largely invisible work involving drainage, plumbing, heating and wiring.
He impressed us from the start with an excellent combination of listening to our ideas and gently steering us (when needed) with his own, without exception excellent thoughts and ideas. His entire approach is friendly, he is always available, helpful and flexible (we changed our minds several times). His drawings and plans are superb, the detail making cost projection very easy and accurate (our project came in under budget even after we added items to the plans as the renovation progressed. His relationships with local builders was also most useful, and after an extensive tendering process we chose one of the building companies he recommended (TB&R) who were also excellent throughout especially with Tim’s hands on project management.
The style and finish quality are both superb, thanks again to Tim’s vision and meticulous planning. We would highly recommend him and will definitely be using JHD’s service in the future with the next stage of our renovations. Jhd are also entirely electronic in terms of drawings and documentation making for easy communication with great software allowing 3-D modelling of the proposed plans to help the customer. The pricing structure was also very reasonable and fair.”

“We appointed jhd Architects to remodel the entrance area to our A-frame house. We contacted them because we knew they had a reputation for high professional standards, reliability and fair pricing. We particularly appreciated the time and effort they put into understanding our brief and discussing our needs in depth before coming up with an innovative idea. Their attention to detail was impressive. We now have a stylish entrance area, much needed storage space and no longer see an ugly garage door. We would certainly recommend Tim Ball for his reliability, interesting ideas and professionalism. His own house, which he designed himself, is also amazing! I would definitely use Tim again”

“We commissioned an architect because we had always disliked houses that were ‘predictable’ from the outside…..the classic 3 bed semi! We purchased a small timber cottage that was nicely located and within a decent sized plot with a view to building a new house that would meet our family needs and provide an interesting yet practical layout. We chose jhd Architects based on a personal recommendation received from a friend whose judgement we trusted. Our own initial thoughts and designs were fairly conventional, with little to recommend them regarding the interior layouts and spaces. Although we were tightly constrained by planning guidelines, working with jhd resulted in a modern take on a conventional exterior, with an exciting interior layout that provided a feeling of space and light that we would not have achieved without their professional guidance.
The exterior elevations present clean lines and use conventional materials that have weathered well and still look attractive. We have got used to the house, but new visitors are without fail impressed by the open layout, space and light. The views to the garden are impressive. The interior is naturally well lit and welcoming even on dull days. The basement light wells are particularly effective and the rooms don’t have that ‘basement’ feeling. The high specification insulation and effectiveness of the under-floor heating make for a draft -free and very comfortable atmosphere. The large open plan kitchen and integrated family room particularly suit our family and lifestyle. As a result of the roof ridge height restrictions imposed by the Planning authority the upstairs bedrooms have amazingly attractive ceilings, although storage space is limited.
The ground floor WC and cloaks cupboard locations could have been reversed providing a more practical layout, although that would have been detrimental to the layout of the lounge -a trade off. Not enough attention was given to the disabled access to the lower ground floor. Although the present arrangement works efficiently, it is not particularly aesthetically pleasing. We have thought of a better solution soon after completion, but it would have incurred unwanted additional expense during the build.
We would recommend jhd Architects as being good listeners, who will develop sketched ideas through interactive discussion to a final quality design. Selection of construction materials was always top quality with room for our input on brickwork, colours, windows, internal doors and the like, but we found that we almost always agreed with jhd’s initial recommendations.
jhd assisted with the selection of the Building Contractor and monitored construction throughout in a most professional way. The builder selected performed extremely well, completing a quality build in record time. Site clearance started 1st October and we moved into the finished house mid-June the following year; only 8½ months start to finish, and that’s with working right through the winter months. Eight years on and we’ve only had minor maintenance to deal with. The house still feels new.”
